So you want to be a software tester and don’t know how to start.
There are plenty of ways to become a software tester and we’ve talked to a number of people curious about how to break into the field. If you ask current testers what their background is here are some answers you may get:
- They have technical degrees and test high technical aspects of software
- They come with a business background and know exactly what the business wants
- They have moved from programming or other parts of IT when they found a passion for testing and making sure the code was correct
- They started in test Automation and then stayed
Regardless of which path they follow people often start out with an organization. This company may provide formal training in testing along with knowledge about the application being tested. A good organisation will allow their testers to grow in the field. That company will provide a career path for personal and technical development and improvement.
If you are looking to break into the field, look for an organisation that develops or tests something that interests you. If you have an interest in new software look for a startup or an innovative company. If you have an interest in finance then you might want to look at financial companies. If your interests fall within manufacturing then look for an organisation that does that.
Make sure to join LinkedIn Groups and your local Quality Assurance group. These are great options for networking. You may want to consider a certification depending on whether the funds and time permit you to pursue it. Ensure that you understand the environment into which you want to go and are prepared for the interview questions. There is nothing worse than not knowing what to expect or how to handle it.
